Muscle Relaxing Injections
Botox injections are one of the most common cosmetic treatments in the world. 50,000 vials of Botox were used in the UK alone last year. As well as many celebrities normal people are now finding it a quick and simple way to maintain a youthful appearance.
Botox is Botulinum Toxin A, a diluted form of the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. In small quantities Botox interrupts nerve impulses to muscles in the face and preventing frowning. When these muscles relax fine lines and wrinkles are dispersed.
A Potted history of Botox®
Botulinum toxin is a protein which comes from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum which was first discovered in 1817 in Wurttemberg in what is now Germany. It was isolated in sausages, after they had been infected with the bacteria, which were then named after the Latin word for sausage, botulus.
Further scientific study followed and in 1980 the first trial of the use of botulinim toxin in patients with squints was published. By 1982 it was used for many other therapeutic purposes too.
In 1992 the use of botulinum toxin had developed to include cosmetic use. Dr Jean Carruthers, an American ophthalmologist, had found that, as a side effect of this treatment for squint, patients’ “Crows feet” got better too! Dr Carruthers’ dermatologist husband was quick to use this new treatment for wrinkle reduction and a new way keeping you looking young had arrived!
Botox® was licensed by the US Food and Drug administration (FDA) in 1989 for medical use, and then for cosmetic use in 2002.
